The reduction in size and parallel increase in power enjoyed by computers and computing technology over the past 50 years is unprecedented. The reduction in size of mobile devices like iPhone from the brick-like phones we all remember from 10 years ago to the sexy slim ‘ooops-I-dropped-my-cell-phone-down-a-plug-hole’ machines of today has been almost as impressive.
Taking computing and technology together, though yields the most interesting results: the MobiCom revolution is here and it is putting our computers in our phones (or vice-versa. Who can say?).
The research driving mobile technology and computing have slowly converged to the point where the iPhone, for example, does almost all the things your home computer will do. Only the iPhone’s size (ironically) prevents it – and others like it – completely replacing the computer in everyday life.
The MobiCom revolution has begun. How far it will take either mobile technology or computing is anyone’s guess, but it’s sure to be an exciting few years.
