People across America are divided on the subject of a little-known plant called Salvia. Salvia Divinorum is part of the Herb family and is related to the popular garden variety of Salvia. The cause of this national split is on the alternative use for the plant: as an extremely potent hallucinogenic drug.
Anti-drug legislators such as Anthony Adams are fighting to have the drug banned – or at the very least have its sale restricted – and there are laws currently in the Senate that will achieve just this.
On the other side of the fence is Dr. Charles Grob, director of child and adolescent psychiatry at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. Grob states that, while he is no drug advocate, he is concerned about the effect illegalizing Salvia Divinorum will have on its quality and production. He said an underground market with less quality control may emerge. He is also concerned about the effect that making the drug illegal will have on research into its (possibly beneficial) properties.
